Stream Passage Survey Project
We need you to help us identify barriers to fish passage in area streams and rivers for our Stream Passage Survey Project (Adopt- A-Stream Project for 2010).
SRBP will show you how to survey road stream crossings to gather valuable information needed to assess whether fish and other aquatic organisms can pass by these structures. The inability to travel past crossings (culverts, bridges, etc.) can cut off miles of stream and habitat from fish and other organisms. You can choose you time commitment to the project. We welcome those who would like to survey just one spot in their neighborhood to those who would like to survey many crossings throughout the basin. The survey is quick, taking an hour or less to complete.
We will be using the information you gather to look at how fish passage and habitat can be improved in our basin’s streams and rivers and to prioritize restoration projects to maximize our efforts. The data will also be shared with The Nature Conservancy/US Forest Service staff for their Great Lakes Regional fish passage project. Help SRBP make a difference in your back yard and in the Great Lakes Region! Contact SRBP@sheboyganrivers.org if you are interested in participating.
History of the Adopt-A-Stream
The Adopt-A-Stream Program was developed to encourage connections between people and their local streams and rivers. The goal of the program is to engage citizens in stream based projects that connect them to their local waterways and to educate them about their watershed, while at the same time protecting and improving streams and rivers in the Sheboygan River Basin.

The program offers a variety of projects for people of different interests, ages and skill levels. Some activities call for action once per year and others require participation throughout the year. Projects included in the Adopt-A-Stream Program typically are administered by a state or national agency or organization. The data you may collect as a “Stream Friend” can be entered into a web-based database or submitted to the administering group and shared and analyzed with others across the state or nation!
Join Adopt-A-Stream

How do I participate?
Getting involved in the Adopt-A-Stream Program is easy. To participate in the program, individuals or groups need to do at least one activity a year from the Adopt-A-Stream Program. If you have an activity that you would like to do, but is not listed in the program, contact the Sheboygan River Basin Partnership (SRBP) Adopt-A-Stream coordinator for help in incorporating your project into the program.
A $30 yearly enrollment fee is collected to cover costs of program administration, materials and newsletters. Also, SRBP asks that Stream Friends report on their project, and share a few photos if possible, once a year to the Adopt-A-Stream Coordinator or SRBP Board.
What do I get?
All Stream Friends are recognized on the Sheboygan River Basin Partnership website and in newsletters. They also have access to the expertise and resources SRBP provides. Friends are automatically enrolled as SRBP members and will receive the SRBP newsletters. They will also be added to the SRBP mailing list for announcements of events, trainings and project updates. Stream Friends are eligible to be nominated for a SRBP Watershed Leadership Award.
How do I choose a project?
It is recommended that groups or individuals first participate in Step I and II projects, before deciding to undertake a Step III project. All the Step I and II activities are existing programs that offer training materials or guidelines and data sharing opportunities. Step III activities are more advanced and require some existing knowledge of the stream as well as individually designed restoration and protection activities. The Step III projects should be advised and assisted by a SRBP director. See the following Project Matrix for assistance in choosing a project.
